Paula Scher – Public Theater – 1995

If you look at Paula Scher’s work, you can see the influence of all four movements (Futurism, Constructivism, Dadaism and De Stijl). In this particular piece you can see the influence of Dadaism.

These posters have word and type spread on the page in a random but intentional way and neglects the use of a grid. Her designs are free flowing and not based on the ignorance of the traditional forms and rules of graphic design.

This image here is a strong example of random because many different systems are in use here and the type is shown in many different weights, which makes this work fall under the system Random. In this case, this type of treatment works because the text is surround by the image of the actor who’s in the production.  Some may say its hard to read but I think it works. The hierarchy is definitely between the image and the public theatre word mark and then the da noise, da funk, and then your eye examines the following text.
